Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun

Annual Convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy was organized on 24th August 2013.

The Annual Convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy was organized in the Convocation Hall, FRI, Dehradun on 24th August 2013. Shri K Jude Sekar, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Shri R K Goel, Director, IGNFA in his address informed the gathering that this institution erstwhile, as Indian Forest College and now as Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy has served the country for last 75 years. All the Indian Forest Service officers in independent India and around 331 forest officers from 16 of the neighboring countries have been trained in this institution. The present 2011-13 batch, which is passing out today, consists of 66 IFS officers, including 14 lady Probationers, and 2 Foreign Trainees from Bhutan. There are 4 Ph.D, 38 Post Graduates and 4 Engineers in this batch. The 2012 batch of officer trainees consisting of 79 officers, including 22 lady officer and 2 foreign trainees from Bhutan are also present in this hall. Out of these 19 officers have secured more than 75% marks in the aggregate, thereby qualifying to get the Honours Diploma. All those who have successfully completed the training were awarded the Associate of IGNFA Diploma by the Chief Guest. He urged the young Probationers to work with utmost sincerity and devotion. He also told them that their compassionate attitude for the local communities will help them in protection and conservation of our forests, which are the great repository of biodiversity.

At the ceremony, the officers who had shown outstanding achievements were awarded the different prizes and awards. Ms Monali Sen of Himachal Pradesh cadre became the topper of the 2011-13 training course.

Shri K Jude Sekar Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India in his Convocation address, congratulated the officer trainees and noted that the training imparted at the IGNFA prepares the officers for the tough challenges that lie ahead of the young officers in their jobs. He also noted that environment has emerged as prime agenda for the 21st centaury of which forests is an integral part. About 1.3 billion people in the world live at less than $ 1.25 per day. Hence, it is not possible to develop sustainably without putting people at the centre of sustainable development and without strong commitment to eradicate poverty and hunger. The rhetoric needs to be backed by equally strong efforts and actions. He also exhorted them to remember Mahatma Gandhi’s talisman, to ponder how our action impacts the life of the poorest, most miserable person we have ever seen. He also drew attention towards the emergent concept of REDD+ and managing forests for ecosystem services. The forest managers, he felt, now can work with confidence with the local institutions of decentralized governance such as Gram Sabhas, Panchayats, Joint Forest Committees etc. He also exhorted the officers to act as facilitators and converting the threats to forests into opportunity by eliciting people’s cooperation.

The Convocation ceremony was attended by a large number of senior level officers from the central and state govt. organizations.
